Winter driving tips

Whilst staying home and warm is great if you can do it, sometimes the choices aren't that easy. A few minutes spent preparing the car and thinking about winter driving will reward you well.

Windscreen: do you have enough additive in your screenwash to stop it freezing? Most of us don’t hit what we see – so make sure you CAN see! If you use just water in summer, then top up with ‘ready-mixed screenwash’ in winter, chances are it won’t be good enough in severe conditions – a good amount of concentrated screenwash direct into the reservoir will give much better protection by strengthening what is already there.

Tyre condition: just as you'd walk on snow and ice better with chunky footwear with chunky tread, you can’t expect tyres that are almost at the end of their life to stop you sliding as well. Replace them now if you can, if not you need to drive just like you walk when wearing slippy shoes, very carefully!

Remember though it isn't just you. If the driver behind you is on slippy tyres, you are at risk when slowing down. When cars around you are sliding, do you really want to be close to them?

Parked vehicles seldom skid! Much of the rest of it is down to you, the driver. Drive to allow for the mistakes others will make. There are up to half a million newer drivers on the road now who haven’t built their confidence in winter driving yet, are you ready for them?
